I've mentioned before that when we come to North Carolina there are certain places I need to go before returning. During this trip we made it to China King for lunch and Harbor Inn for dinner.
At China King, we were (thankfully) the only people there so we let Liam walk around a bit- he kept going up to the sliding glass door and peeking inside at our food being cooked- very inquisitive!
We had dinner at Harbor Inn with my parents, brother, his girlfriend, Grace, and my aunts Betty and Donna as well as Donna's husband, James. You can see the mess Miss Malia made on the floor during her meal.

May 29 = Sad Day
Last week my mom's good friend's husband died in a car accident- it was a shock and while I knew it would be challenging going to North Carolina for just the weekend- it was so important for me to be there. Robbie and Rhonda have been to tons of birthday celebrations, our wedding, baby showers for both kids, Liam's first birthday- pretty much every important occasion. Zachary stayed home with the kids while I went with my parents to the funeral. Zachary snapped these pictures of Malia while they were on the front porch swing with the American flag in the background.
May 27 = Aquarium Day
We took Liam to the Baltimore aquarium a few days before Malia was born as our last outing as a family of three. It didn't go so well. We weren't allowed to keep our stroller so Zachary chased Liam around and wasn't able to enjoy the sea critters. I typically enjoy a zoo more than an aquarium but keeping in mind that Zachary likes aquariums more and wasn't able to enjoy the last visit- I happily chose the aquarium for this day.
After the aquarium we headed home, stopped for lunch at Cracker Barrel and were finally reunited with our babies! We all went to the playground for one last outing with Grandma and Pops and Liam persuaded them to swing him while they walked to the car- really had to twist their arms ;)

May 26 = Historic Philadelphia Day
We woke up a little sore from hiking the day before but ready to go! We headed straight to a visitor's center so we could get maps and talk to people who knew what they were talking about and made a plan from there. We found out pretty much everything was free but to go into Independence Hall and see the main attractions, you had to have a ticket. So we got a ticket but the earliest ticket was for 2:45 so we had quite a bit of time. So we headed over to a long, long line to see the liberty bell first.
Since we waited so long, we read every bit of the information on the walls talking about its history and also its influence on the future- different groups that had used its inscription towards their cause.
Then we wandered around a little bit and saw some assorted neat things:
And then we went in a completely different direction both literally and figuratively and walked to the site where Rocky runs up a bunch of stairs in the first Rocky movie- the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We didn't know there was a statue there of Rocky so that was exciting. I was going to take a picture of Zachary next to it but this man encouraged us to both go up there and he would take a picture of us.
I knew immediately this was not going to come without a price and sure enough, after he took the phone from Zachary's hand, he said, I do this all day for tips. We didn't have any cash on us so he led us to a restaurant inside of a building which has part of its first floor serving as a homeless shelter- very interesting. Here's Zachary and his new friend:
Our tour guide was a trip- he talked very quickly and got very irritated with the whining children and talking adults but he knew his stuff. First, we saw a typical courtroom- the prisoner stood in the cage and he told us a lot of other stuff about how trials worked- stuff like one of the two doors in the back were real, the other was just painted on, not functional. The jury sat on the right of the room and the witness stand was on the left. There were multiple judges and there were audiences standing where we stood who could get in big trouble if they made too much noise.
Then we walked over to the room where the Declaration of Independence was signed. I had never thought about it like this before but had the revolution not been successful, the signers of this document would have been convicted of treason so there was some serious business going down in this room.
After those two rooms, we went to a small museum where we saw the pen stand used by the signers:
After this, I had had my fill of walking so we went back to the room, showered, and did something we can't ever do with our children- watch a movie in a theater! We saw Pitch Perfect 2 and it was awesome. Then we walked around the mall a little bit more- I found a Jamba Juice which I have not had a smoothie from since college. We also did one more thing we can't do easily with children- I went clothes shopping! I found a lot of stuff I loved so it was a very successful trip!
Finally we headed back to our hotel, changed again, and headed out to dinner. We found another pub in hopes of finding me some potato skins. We did find potato skins but the cheese on them was liquid and it was so gross. I also ordered a lemon drop. Now the lemon drop I have had before was like lemonade with a kick. This tasted like a glass of vodka with a drop of lemon juice. But I drank it like a champ. Zachary had a long island iced tea and a beer and was feeling pretty good. I wanted to catch up with him, ya know, get on his level... so we found a bar and I asked the bartender to please make me something fruity and sweet. Rum punch. Perfection. However, it didn't really affect me very much. Zachary ordered another long island iced tea and thought it would be fun to take this picture on the walk home:

And finally, I wanted a good picture of the statue itself so we went back:
We walked pretty much the whole 2.5 miles back before stopping for lunch- we found an Irish pub and Zachary got his Philly cheesesteak. I got some wings and cheese fries- yum.
And we made it to our tour of Independence Hall just in time!

This building also housed actual copies of the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation.
Here's the outside of the building- very tall!

May 25 = Hiking Day!
Woo-hoo! Today's the day! I will miss my kids but Zachary and I are overdue for a little alone time. We headed to Philadelphia mid-morning- we enjoyed car ride conversations- something that only occurs when no kids are in the car. We casually made pit stops for bathroom breaks, picking up sunscreen and getting snacks. We made a couple wrong turns but it was okay because we weren't in a huge hurry counting down the minutes until a backseat breakdown. We made it to the park and set out on the closest trail. Here are some pictures from our 6 mile hike:
After the hike, we headed to the hotel to check-in. We showered, got dressed, and headed to dinner. We went to Cantina Laredo- one of Zachary's favorite places to eat- there's one in Jacksonville and it's actually the last place we ate out in Jacksonville because it is his favorite so when I was looking for somewhere for dinner and saw this, I was so excited to tell him! This picture was sneakily taken by my husband after I had consumed a margarita or two...
The restaurant was in a mall so we walked off the tequila and looked around a little bit. We headed back to the hotel and had a quiet night in. A great first day of vacation!
Aaaaaand Grandma was very thoughtful and shared pictures of the kids with us- this was my favorite from the day:

May 24 = Learn Bad Habits Day
Liam has started enjoying putting his feet on the dinner table. We discourage this which makes him laugh and want to do it more. Thankfully scooting him closer to the table helps dissuade him from doing this but we didn't stop this habit quickly enough- Miss Priss has caught on.
Also, my veggies are growing!
Grandma and Pops came in today- they're going to be watching the kids for the next few days so Zachary and I can go to Philadelphia- it's going to be our early anniversary celebration and I'm super excited! We took them to see Zachary's new office after they got in.

May 23 = Climb Daddy Day
I got Malia dressed after her bath and chose a cute Boston Red Sox shirt- I wanted to get a picture of her in it but she decided it was a good opportunity to climb all over daddy instead.
You can see uncle Matty in the background here- he had texted me on Mother's Day with a very sweet message and later asked if we would be around this weekend. He surprised Zachary by coming up and visiting for the weekend with his fiance, Rachel.
